Australian Culture

Australia’s culture primarily draws from British influences, reflecting its colonial history. However, it also deeply acknowledges the enduring heritage of the Australian Aboriginal peoples, who have inhabited this land for approximately 60,000 years.

Our societal ethos centers around friendliness, mateship, and a commitment to fairness for everyone. Australians typically exhibit a relaxed approach to conversation and a healthy ability to poke fun at themselves. These traits trace back to our origins as a penal colony, the bonds formed among soldiers during the world wars, and the rich tapestry of our multicultural society, shaped by decades of embracing immigrants.

The southern regions of Australia experience a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot summers and mild winters. This climate is perfect for a wide range of sports and outdoor activities throughout the year. Australians are passionate about making the most of our sunny weather, beautiful beaches, and expansive parklands. With vast bushlands and diverse wildlife, there’s always something new and exciting to discover.

If you’re wondering what to see or do in Australia, don’t hesitate to ask a local. They’re always eager to help and share the best of what Australia has to offer.

Power and Plugs

Australia’s electrical current is 240v, 50Hz AC.  Our plugs have 2 flat metal pins shaped like a “V” and some contain a third flat pin in the centre.

Most travelers will need a plug adapter for Australia. North Americans will also need to check that their electrical appliances can handle 240v (if you have an electrical item that is not rated for 240v you may also require a transformer).

Tip 1

Bring a power board from home if you have mutiple devices, and only one adaptor for the board 🙂

Tip 2

USB are universal, check with your hotel if they have USB Charge points.

Visas – Border Control

All visitors to Australia (except New Zealanders) require a visa which must be obtained prior to travelling to Australia.

For visitors from the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea who intend to stay for less than three months this will be an eVisitor for Europeans or ETA for North Americans and some Asian nationals.

Because of Australia’s position as an island nation, many travelers will find that Australian Customs has somewhat stringent regulations compared to some other countries. Of particular note is that most food, plant, and animal material is prohibited from being brought into the country.

For more details please visit Australian Customs.

Tip 1

It is your responsibility to ensure you have the appropriate visa before coming to Australia. If you have any questions, please visit the Department of Immigration.

Tip 2

These electronic visas can be easily obtained online, replace a stamp in your passport, and are valid for multiple entries into Australia over a period of three months.
